What is Folate?

Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin (Vitamin B9) that plays an important role in many biological processes in the body. Folate occurs naturally in foods such as leafy green vegetables, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast and liver.

The total amount of folate in the body is relatively small, with approximately half stored in the liver and the remainder distributed throughout the blood and body tissues. Because it is water soluble, folate is not stored in large amounts and is typically obtained regularly through the diet.

Health Leads Folate is supplied as L-Methylfolate (5-Methyltetrahydrofolate / 5-MTHF), the naturally active form of folate used by the body.

What does Folate do?

Folate contributes to:

• normal blood formation

• normal function of the immune system

• reduction of tiredness and fatigue

• normal amino acid synthesis

• normal psychological function

Folate also plays a role in cell division and tissue growth.

Adequate maternal folate status contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.

The EU Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) for folate is 200µg for adults.

Folate vs Folic Acid

Folate is the naturally occurring form of vitamin B9 found in foods, while folic acid is the synthetic form commonly used in fortified foods and supplements.
