What is Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in many functions within the body. It can be obtained from sunlight exposure, certain foods and food supplements.

Dietary sources of vitamin D include oily fish, liver, eggs and some fortified foods such as breakfast cereals, bread and powdered milk.

In supplements, vitamin D3 is commonly derived from lanolin, a natural substance obtained from wool sheared from live sheep. For this reason, vitamin D3 supplements are generally not suitable for vegans, although they are suitable for vegetarians.

Vitamin D is often expressed in International Units (IU), a measurement used to indicate the biological activity of the vitamin.
