Why do I wake up in the night?
Waking briefly during the night is normal — most people surface several times between sleep cycles without remembering it. What people usually mean is waking and struggling to get back to sleep.

Common contributors include alcohol, which fragments the second half of the night, a room that is too warm, needing the bathroom, and irregular sleep timing. Waking at a consistent time each night often points to a habit or an environmental trigger rather than anything medical. Waking regularly in the small hours and being unable to return to sleep is worth discussing with your GP.
Does caffeine really affect sleep hours later? Popular
Yes. Caffeine has a half-life of roughly five hours, meaning half of what you consume is still in your system five hours later and a quarter after ten. A coffee at 3pm leaves a measurable amount at bedtime.

Sensitivity varies considerably between individuals, and some people metabolise caffeine much more slowly than others. If you sleep poorly and drink coffee after midday, moving your last cup earlier is one of the simplest things to test.
What is sleep hygiene, and does it work?
Sleep hygiene refers to the behaviours and environment around sleep: a consistent bedtime and wake time, a cool dark room, limiting screens and bright light in the evening, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol close to bed.

The evidence is reasonably good for these as a package, particularly consistent timing, which appears to matter more than any single other factor. It is less effective as a treatment for established insomnia, where structured approaches such as CBT-I have stronger support. Sleep hygiene is best thought of as prevention rather than cure.
How much magnesium do we get from diet?
The EU Nutrient Reference Value for magnesium is 375mg. Dietary sources include leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, pulses and dark chocolate. A varied diet containing these regularly will typically provide a substantial proportion of that figure.

Intakes vary widely between individuals, and diets low in wholegrains, vegetables and nuts tend to be lower in magnesium. What's the difference between magnesium oxide and magnesium gluconate? Popular
Both are magnesium salts, but they differ in elemental magnesium content and absorption. Magnesium oxide is an inorganic salt with a high proportion of elemental magnesium by weight — around 60% — but a relatively low absorption rate. Magnesium gluconate is an organic salt with a lower elemental content but better bioavailability, and is generally considered gentler on the digestive system.

What is L-theanine and where does it come from?
L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green and black tea leaves, and in small quantities in certain mushrooms. It is not an essential nutrient — the body does not require it from the diet and does not produce it.

Health Leads supplies L-theanine at 200mg per capsule, and also combined with lemon balm at 175mg. There are no authorised health claims for L-theanine, so we do not make any.
Can I take magnesium and L-theanine together?
There is no known interaction between magnesium and L-theanine, and they are commonly taken as part of the same routine. They are different types of compound — one an essential mineral, the other a non-essential amino acid — and do not compete for absorption.

Understanding Sleep

Most people know what a bad night feels like without knowing much about what sleep actually is. It isn't a single state — it cycles through light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep and REM sleep roughly every ninety minutes, and a full night contains four to six of those cycles. Deep sleep is concentrated in the first half of the night; REM lengthens towards morning. This is why a broken night can leave you tired even if the hours add up: interrupted cycles are not the same as short ones.

Timing is governed by circadian rhythm, an internal clock set largely by light. Bright light in the morning brings the clock forward; light in the evening, including from screens, pushes it back. For most people, an irregular schedule disrupts sleep more than an early or late one does — the body adapts to a consistent pattern far better than a shifting one.
