L-Lysine is one of the nine essential amino acids — amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own and must obtain from the diet. It is found naturally in protein-rich foods including meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, legumes and some grains. As one of the twenty amino acids used to build proteins, L-Lysine forms part of many normal biological processes throughout the body. Because the body cannot synthesise it, regular dietary intake or supplementation is required to maintain adequate levels.

L-Lysine and D-Lysine are mirror-image forms (stereoisomers) of the same amino acid. The L-form is the biologically active form found in proteins and used by the body. The D-form does not occur naturally in significant amounts in food or the body and is not used in food supplements. When a product is labelled simply as Lysine, it is always the L-form.
