What is Malic Acid?

Malic Acid is a naturally occurring organic compound and a type of alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). It is widely found in fruits, particularly green apples, as well as grapes and rhubarb, where it contributes to their characteristic tart flavour.

The name malic comes from the Latin word mālum, meaning apple. The compound was first described in the late 18th century and is known in German as Äpfelsäure (apple acid).

Malic Acid is commonly used in foods and beverages as a natural acidifier and flavouring component, including in fruit products and wines.

What does Malic Acid do?

Malic Acid occurs naturally in many foods and is involved in normal metabolic processes in the body. As an organic acid present in fruit, it is often included in food supplements as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

It is also widely used in the food industry as a flavouring and acidity regulator.

Suggested Adult Use

As a food supplement, take approximately ¼ teaspoon (around 800mg) once per day mixed with water or juice.

Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
