What Is Mastic Gum?
Despite its name, Mastic Gum isn't conventional chewing gum.
It is a natural plant resin produced by Pistacia lentiscus, a member of the Anacardiaceae botanical family.
Small cuts are traditionally made in the bark of the mastic tree, allowing droplets of resin to emerge. When exposed to air, these droplets gradually harden into translucent pieces traditionally known as mastic tears because of their characteristic shape.
The hardened resin can then be collected, cleaned and prepared for use.
Mastic and the Island of Chios
Mastic has a particularly strong historical association with Chios, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea.
The resin has been harvested there for generations using traditional cultivation techniques, and mastic has been used throughout Mediterranean culture as a food ingredient, flavouring and botanical preparation.
