Vitamin B1, also known as Thiamine, is a water-soluble B vitamin that the body cannot produce on its own and must obtain regularly from food or supplementation. It was the first of the B vitamins to be scientifically identified. Because it is water-soluble, Thiamine is not stored in significant amounts in the body and is typically obtained through the diet.
Thiamine occurs naturally in many foods including wholegrains, legumes, nuts, seeds and pork. It plays an important role in several normal metabolic processes, particularly in relation to energy production from carbohydrates.
