Myo-Inositol: What It Is and Who Takes It
Share
Myo-inositol has moved from relative obscurity into mainstream supplement use over the last decade, largely driven by a growing body of research and a community of people sharing their experiences online. It's worth looking at what it actually is and what the science says, without the hype that tends to accumulate around anything that gains traction on social media.
What Inositol Is
Inositol is a naturally occurring compound found in many foods — particularly fruits, beans, grains and nuts. It's sometimes grouped with the B vitamins historically, though it's not strictly a vitamin because the body can synthesise it from glucose. It functions as a structural component of cell membranes and plays a role in intracellular signalling pathways, including those involved in insulin signalling and neurotransmitter activity.
There are nine chemical forms (stereoisomers) of inositol. The most abundant in human biology — and the most studied as a supplement — is myo-inositol.
Myo-Inositol vs D-Chiro-Inositol
The two forms most commonly found in supplements are myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol (DCI). Myo-inositol is the predominant form in the body and in food, and is the form used in the majority of research. DCI is a metabolite of myo-inositol, present in the body at lower concentrations, and is sometimes used in combination products alongside myo-inositol.
Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) — found in legumes and grains — is a different compound with a different physiological profile. It's not the same as supplemental myo-inositol and the two shouldn't be conflated.
Why Powder Makes More Sense Than Capsules
Myo-inositol is typically taken in larger amounts — often 2–4g per day, sometimes more. At 4g per day, you'd need eight standard 500mg capsules. Powder stirred into water or juice is considerably more practical, and myo-inositol dissolves easily and has a mild, slightly sweet taste that most people find neutral.
Our Myo-Inositol Powder 300g is pure myo-inositol with no fillers, flavourings or additives. A 300g tub provides approximately 75 servings at 4g per serving. Made in Wales.
Who Tends to Take Myo-Inositol
- Women researching hormonal balance and metabolic health — the largest group, driven by a substantial and growing body of research in this area
- People interested in insulin signalling pathways, given inositol's role in intracellular insulin signalling
- Those exploring its role in mood and anxiety, given inositol's involvement in neurotransmitter signalling pathways including serotonin
- People who've been recommended it by a practitioner — it's increasingly appearing in clinical protocols
The Bottom Line
Myo-inositol is one of the more interesting supplements in the current research landscape — with a genuine and growing evidence base, rather than the thin or cherry-picked evidence that props up many popular supplements. The powder format makes practical sense at the doses typically used, and given its clean safety profile, it's reasonable to try as part of a considered routine.
