What is Taurine?

Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a naturally occurring amino sulphonic compound found throughout the body.

Although often grouped with amino acids, taurine differs slightly in structure because it does not contain a carboxyl group. The body can synthesise taurine from the amino acid cysteine, primarily in the liver.

Taurine is present in many tissues including the brain, skeletal muscle and retina, and is also a component of bile, where it contributes to normal fat digestion.

Dietary sources of taurine include meat and seafood.
