Which vitamins are involved in energy? Popular
Several B vitamins have authorised roles in how the body produces and uses energy. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 all contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism — the process of releasing energy from food. Vitamins B2, B3, B6 and B12 additionally contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. These are authorised EU health claims.

Vitamin C, magnesium and iron also contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. This is why B vitamins and these minerals appear together in many energy-focused products.
Do B vitamins actually give you energy?
Not in the sense of a stimulant. The authorised claim is that they contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism — they are part of the machinery that releases energy from food, rather than a source of energy themselves.

The practical implication is that they support a normal process. If your intake is already adequate, more will not raise your energy above normal. Their value is in maintaining sufficiency, particularly where diet is restricted or demands are high.
What's the difference between a B complex and single B vitamins?
A B complex contains the full group of B vitamins in one capsule, which suits most people looking for general support across the group. Single B vitamins — such as B12 or B6 on their own — allow a specific one to be taken at a higher intake, which is useful if you have a particular reason to focus on it.

The B vitamins work in overlapping metabolic pathways, so for general use the complex is the simpler choice. Targeted single vitamins are better suited to a specific, identified need.
Why is iron linked to tiredness?
Iron contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, which carry oxygen around the body. These are authorised EU health claims.

Low iron is one of the most common nutritional causes of persistent tiredness, particularly in menstruating women, vegetarians and vegans. If you are frequently tired without obvious reason, a GP can check your iron status with a simple blood test before you supplement, since taking iron you don't need is not advisable.
Should I take iron with vitamin C?
Vitamin C contributes to increased iron absorption — an authorised EU health claim — which is why the two are often combined. Taking iron alongside vitamin C, or with a source of it such as citrus, can help the body absorb more of the iron consumed.

What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10 is a compound produced naturally by the body and found in every cell, where it plays a part in energy production within the mitochondria. It is also obtained in small amounts from food, particularly meat and fish.

Health Leads supplies CoQ10 in capsules from 30mg to 400mg, and as a powder. There are no authorised health claims for CoQ10, so while it is widely used and well studied, we describe what it is rather than making claims for it.
Do I need a multivitamin if I eat a balanced diet?
A varied, balanced diet is the best foundation for nutritional intake, and someone eating well across all food groups will meet most of their needs from food. A multivitamin is not a substitute for that.

Where a multivitamin can be useful is as a background top-up when diet is restricted, appetite is reduced, or particular food groups are limited — for example in vegetarian or vegan diets, during periods of high demand, or where variety is hard to maintain. Certain nutrients also warrant specific attention regardless of diet: in the UK, government advice is that most people should consider a vitamin D supplement in the autumn and winter months, when sunlight is insufficient for the body to make its own.
